Azerbaijan's victory in Nagorno Karabakh | Thousands of Azeris Celebrate victory

Azerbaijan victory in nagora karabakh

After Azerbaijan announced his country’s forces had taken Shusha, which sits on a mountaintop overlooking Nagorno-Karabakh’s main city, the streets of Baku and the whole country erupted into celebrations.

Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev said in a tweet,
"I am also happy to deliver this pleasant news to my people. We are proud of our people, of our Armed Forces! For our people, these days are the happiest ones, I am fortunate to have fulfilled a father’s will. We liberated Shusha! This is a great victory! Today may the soul of National Leader and our martyrs be praised! I felicitate you, Azerbaijan!”

In a sermon, he said,
"God bless all our heroes as a result of their heroism and self-sacrifice we return to our lands may god heal all our wounded soldiers let them recover soon and return to normal life".

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the news broke Armenia had surrendered the battle for control of Nagorno-Karabakh was over.

Azerbaijan celebration after victory

Thousand of Azeris were on street holding flags of Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Pakistan. Even physical constraints didn't stop some people from showing their joy. Beating their victory drums and dancing in the streets, it's a celebration these Azerbaijanis have waited almost 30 years.

President Aliyev called it an Armenian defeat agreed with Russian mediation under the deal Azerbaijan will hold on to the areas of Nagorno-Karabakh that it took during the recent fighting while Armenia has agreed to withdraw from several other nearby areas in the coming few weeks. Russian peacekeepers will remain in the region for an extendable five years

But many people in the Azeri capital Baku don't completely trust Russian peacekeepers and wanted their forces to retake all of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh regions. The Turkish foreign minister called the deal a sacred success as the Azeri president hinted the Turkish peacekeepers in addition to the Russians but it's not yet decided exactly how those troops will be deployed.

But this victory came at a cost since the fighting escalated six weeks ago almost 100 Azerbaijani civilians have died in cross-border attacks. There are almost one million internally displaced people in Azerbaijan they had to flee their homes when Armenia illegally occupied Nagorno-Karabakh in the 1990s. Now their dreams of a return are becoming a reality.
